Grid Computing and stochastic distributed simulation.

The purpose of this tutorial is to present the new challenges for distributed simulation. The first part will give a short presentation dealing with the differences between : Grid Computing, Internet Computing, Peer-To-Peer, Cluster Computing, Meta Computing and Parasitic computing. Then the focus will be given to grid computing, which could be considered as distributed computing taken to the next evolutionary stage. We will see what grid computing can do, the concepts of grid computing, the current European status of Grid computing and what will be possible in the near future. We will also state what a grid

cannot do. A second part will deal will the distribution of stochastic simulations and the distribution of simulation experiments (whether stochastic or not). The different techniques in use to distribute random numbers will be presented as well as future research directions. Optimization techniques will be exposed and real applications on ecological modelling and medical projects will be presented to help understanding the impact of grid computing.

Since 1990, Prof. Hill has authored or co-authored various technical papers and he has published three books. Two books concern Object-Oriented Analysis and Simulation, the first in French in 1993, and the 2nd in English in 1996 (both by Addison Wesley), and the third in French concerns the Simulation of Ecosystems with spatial constraints. He has served as chairman or program chairman at various international conferences. He is Associate Editor of the Simulation journal (SCS : Society for Computer Simulation) (www.scs.org) and reviewer for other simulation journals and magazines (Simulation Transactions of the SCS, Simulation Practice and Theory, Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation, Modeling & Simulation).
David Hill is currently full Professor and Head of the System, Network and Soft. Engineering department at ISIMA. D. Hill joined the ISIMA Computer Science & Modelling Institute in 1993 as Associate Professor. He received his French qualification as Research Director in 2000 and the French equiv. of Ph.D. in Object-Oriented Simulation (1993) all from Blaise Pascal University. He also holds a French "Diplome d'Ingenieur" and DEA "Diplome d'Etude Avancee" (received in 1990).
