Email:Business Intelligence and Data Mining with the R Tool
Abstract
Nowadays, it is easy to collect and process data. Such data may hold interesting knowledge (e.g. trends and patterns), hence there as been an growing interest in Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Mining (DM) techniques. DM allows the extraction of useful knowledge from raw data and it is often included in BI systems, which aim at supporting decision-making.
On the other hand, R is a multiple platform (e.g. Windows, Mac OS) open-source tool that is based on a high-level matrix programming language for statistical and data analysis. While not specifically oriented for BI/DM, the R tool includes a large variety of BI/DM algorithms (e.g. Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines). Furthermore, R is currently used by a large number of DM/BI analysts.
The aim of this tutorial is to first describe the basic BI/DM concepts.
Next, the R tool is introduced. Finally, several real-world BI/DM examples are explored.
Requisites: Participants should bring their own laptops. The room will have Internet
wireless access so that the participants can download the tools and examples.
Curriculum Vitae
Paulo Cortez (PhD) is Associate Professor at the Department of Information Systems,
University of Minho, Portugal. He is also researcher at the Business Intelligence Group
of the R&D Algoritmi Centre and his current research interests include: Business
Intelligence, Data Mining, Neural Networks and Forecasting.
He is co-author of more than sixty publications in international conferences and journals
(e.g. published by IEEE, Elsevier or Springer).
He is associate Editor of the Neural Processing Letters journal (Springer, ISI), since
January 2008 to current date.
He participated in 7 R&D projects, being Principal Investigator of 2 projects (funded by
FCT, British Council, CRUP and Engineering School of UMinho). He supervised 14 final
graduation projects, 10 MSc thesis and 1 PhD thesis. He is also author of the open source rminer library, which facilitates the use of Data Mining applications in R.

In order to take part in the tutorial you will need to bring your laptop and to install the R Tool on your laptop.
