Why Simulation is Important: An Engineer's Perspective

Abstract
We have all heard the saying: Cost, Quality, Speed – Pick Two! In the competitive business environment of the 21st century, “Pick Two” may only be good enough to help one stay in the middle of the pack. To truly gain competitive advantage, it is not uncommon for customers to demand and organizations to deliver on all three.
This demand of cost, quality and speed is no different in the technical world. In this keynote presentation, I will share my perspective – through the lens of an industrial research and development organization – on how simulation can simultaneously meet these goals when appropriately applied. General concepts and specific examples on when to leverage simulation, benefits one might expect to gain, and pitfalls to watch out for will be discussed.

Chris Koh is Director and PepsiCo Global R&D Fellow, PepsiCo Advanced Research, based in Plano, TX. Chris received a B.S. from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology, both in Chemical Engineering. Prior to joining PepsiCo in 2000, Chris was Senior R&D Engineer at Mobil Corporation.
Chris’ research interests are in the areas of heat, mass and momentum transfer – specifically as applied to food processing. He and his research team leverage fundamental understanding in food chemistry, physics and engineering to develop novel food process technologies. They partner with PepsiCo’s development teams worldwide to leverage these technologies to improve the manufacturing of current products and to create new offerings to expand PepsiCo’s food portfolio.
Chris sits on the industrial advisory boards for UC Davis’ Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and Center of Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies. As a PepsiCo Fellow, Chris also leads research on the advancement of product- and process-development using state-of-the-art simulation modeling tools. His appointment as a Fellow further supports his passion in developing junior PepsiCo scientists and engineers for technical careers in the consumer packaged goods industry.

An easy-to-learn system for simulation of business problems

Abstract
aGPSS is a stream-lined version of GPSS, the General Purpose Simulation System, which seen over the years is the world's most used program for dynamic simulation of systems facing uncertainty. aGPSS is intended to be the starting point in learning simulation, mainly for business students. aGPSS is the result of an educational development process, mainly at the Stockholm School of Economics, based on feedback from the 10,000 business students that we have taught over several decades. Students, often with little computer experience, have showed us what is difficult and, when they have made repeated mistakes, we have simplified the syntax. We have also added a user friendly graphical user interface. By pointing and clicking on block symbols in a symbol menu, both a block diagram and program code can be constructed. We have recently added an automatic animation system, which directly produces an animation of the basic process using Proof Animation. A demo version of aGPSS can be downloaded from WWW.aGPSS.com.

INGOLF STÅHL is professor emeritus at the Stockholm School of Economics. His chair was in Business Administration, with a focus on computers for decision support, in particular on modeling business processes by simulation. He has been teaching GPSS (a General Purpose Simulation System) since 1975, in Sweden, the US, Norway and Latvia. In 1979 he started work on a streamlined version of GPSS, which, based on student feedback, finally became aGPSS, targeted to be very easy to learn, use and teach. Commercial Simulation Software for Modeling and Analysis of Vehicle Powertrain Systems

Abstract
Powertrain actual developments involve more than one concern in relation with strict requirements from the market and from the authorities. Into powertrain development there are met strong obstacles in order to give all the benefits that a vehicle needs. The developed model for each of the powertrains` subsystems uses more than one modeling and simulation software. Taking into account the different development stages, the development difficulty consists in setting up the model and linking it with co-simulation platforms, taking into account most of its limitations and simulation runtime.
The powertrain virtual development represents a challenge in order to achieve also additional features. It is mandatory not to compromise other vehicle performances during the struggle to develop innovative systems.
Thereby the presentation aims to present a modeling and simulation approach used for powertrain development, taking into account different sub-systems integration and using different modeling and simulation software.

is University Assistant Professor at Automotive Engineering Department from University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, , Romania and also CEO and Founder of AUTOJOBS.RO and AEROJOBS.RO. Valerian Croitorescu earned his Automotive Engineer Degree in 2007, as valedictorian. He prepared the diploma project in France, inside ‘Ecole Nationale D`Ingenieurs De Tarbes’ - ENIT. He also attended two master programs at University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, the first one with regard to technical sciences: `Efficiency and Security in Automotive Engineering` and the second one, an industrial master, `Environmental Management`. His academic records include numerous awards and certifications, being also member of several professional technical societies. In September 2007, Valerian joined the academic stuff of Automotive Engineering Department. In 2008, he founded “autojobs.ro”, a specialized web portal in automotive industry having the goal to help and provide job seekers and employers the opportunity to be connected, followed by “aerojobs.ro” in 2012, aviation dedicated jobs web portal. In 2012, he graduated the Ph.D., Magna cum Laude, at University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, with the thesis “Modern Drives Using Unconventional Energy Storage Devices – Hybrid Electric Vehicles”. A part of his Ph.D. thesis has been accomplished during a research stage at LMS International.
